The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Description of Work
Are you a data scientist, statistician, or quantitative researcher who wants your work to have a direct impact on public safety? Do you have a background in criminal justice, public policy, or social science and strong programming skills? The Innovation and Analysis Section is looking for a Machine Learning Specialist to lead the design and deployment of advanced models and data pipelines that enable data-informed decision-making across the agency.Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:
Experience building, deploying, and monitoring machine learning models in a production environment.
Experience working with criminal justice, public safety, or related public sector data.
Strong foundation in statistics including regression, classification, or causal inference.
Experience with cloud-based data platforms such as Databricks.
Experience supervising or mentoring technical staff.

The Innovation and Analysis Section is located within the Organizational Performance Division. Its primary mission is to drive data-informed decision-making and continuous improvement across the agency. It leads the implementation of the Priority Questions Research Agenda, conducts agency-wide statistical analysis, and manages dashboards and data visualization tools to support staff access to actionable insights. The team also responds to data requests, researches best practices, collaborates on innovative initiatives, and evaluates programs and processes to identify opportunities for improvement.

Bachelor's degree in computer science or an IT related field or related technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution and six years of progressive experience in business application, business intelligence, or enterprise application consulting or development
OR
Associate degree in computer science or an IT related field or related technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution and seven years of progressive experience in business application consulting or development
OR
High School or General Education Development (GED) diploma and ten years of experience in business application, business intelligence, or enterprise application consulting or development
